| Evan's Notch |
Take a magnificent drive in either Summer, Spring or Fall (closed in winter) on Route
113 North from the center of Fryeburg through the most untraveled and most secret notch in our whole region, ending
on Route 2 in Gilead. There are waterfalls off the beaten path, swimming areas right off Route 113, and overnight
camp sites along the way. En route, visit The Chester Eastman Homestead, an historical site in Chatham, New Hampshire
on the Maine border. You will pass local farm stands, open Summer and Fall, where you can stop and find fresh fruits
and vegetables as well as homemade fudge, pies, and local maple syrup. During foliage season, you will not regret
traveling this way through the White Mountain National Forest to get to Mount Washington, because there is hardly
any traffic on this route. Photograph unbelievably beautiful scenery anywhere on this ride through one of the prettiest
national forests in the country.

| Hemlock Bridge |
From Route 5 North in Fryeburg, drive about 6 miles until you come to a second bridge
to cross. Take a right immediately before the bridge then travel on a paved road for about a half a mile until
the road takes a left by Frog Alley Farm. From here, drive about another half mile to Hemlock Bridge on the Old
Saco River. What a gorgeous place to take photos, rest for a while, picnic, or take a short walk! Constructed in
1857, this is one of the prettiest bridges around. It is so peaceful and very remote. When passing through Fryeburg,
don't miss the Fryeburg Historical Society in the center of town, where you can find a wealth of historical information.
Clarence Mulford, who wrote Hop-A-Long Cassidy, lived in Fryeburg and wrote his novels here.

| Douglas Mountain |
Driving east on Route 113 and then on Route 5 from Fryeburg, take a left going up
a hill on the way to Cornish when you see a sign for the Jones Museum.
Follow the hill upwards to the end of the road, where you can visit the museum and enjoy the fantastic mountain
views. This becomes a dead-end, but the ride back down is just as rewarding. On your way back on Routes 113 and
5 West, you can see the Hiram hydroelectric dam from a small picnic area on your left. Stop and take a look. It's
a very big dam on The Saco River.

| Lovell's Route 5 |
| Take another pretty drive north along Route 5 from Lovell village as you view more
gorgeous mountain areas. Visit a country store, stop at a local craft shop, take a short walk, or just pull over
and take it all in! This is a very pretty route any time of year. Look across Kezar Lake to the mountains, considered
the most pristine lake in Maine. Take a left over The Evergreen Valley Road in Stoneham to reach Evan's Notch from
the east side. Brooks, streams, nature, and wildlife abound! |
